Beth Tamke of The Commercial Appeal reported critical information on Elvis’s autopsy findings as they related to the levels of drugs found in the body. Most people will not appreciate the fact that her reporting was transformative in terms of the historical importance of the information, because had she not provided the autopsy data to the public, we likely would never have known what had really happened (or, rather, that the death was not due to some vague cardiac event as postulated repeatedly over the years by Dr. Jerry Francisco).

One line of questioning is extremely important here: Did Tamke locate a source inside the Baptist Hospital Pathology Department who provided the autopsy data to her as a “leak,” or did someone inside the Baptist Pathology Department seek out Tamke and proactively “leak” the information to her in an effort to get this data out to the public? There is even a third possibility: Did Tamke have a source inside the Pathology Department who made the decision to, or was directed to, provide the autopsy data? Was this source also directed to provide Tamke with the precise “cause of death” wording from the death certificate?

Taking this inquiry a step further, if someone proactively leaked the toxicology data to Beth Tamke, knowing she would publish it in one of the two major Memphis newspapers, what could have been that person’s specific motivation? Tamke’s reporting had a “big bang” effect on the narrative, and changed everything from that moment forward. But how does this relate to our current story?
